The ACA shapes coverage rules, employer reporting and market protections.
The Affordable Care Act and its later amendments set many of the rules behind employer coverage, reporting and the individual and small group markets.
The Basics for Employers.
A plain-English summary. This is general information, not legal advice, and the rules change, so check the current text.
Coverage Rules
Plans must cover preventive care without cost sharing and offer dependent coverage to age 26.
Employer Obligations
Larger employers face offer-of-coverage rules and annual reporting.
Market Protections
Rules limit preexisting condition exclusions and set essential health benefits in the individual and small group markets.
How it plays out.
The Affordable Care Act is a collection of rules, so it helps to sort them by who they affect. Some apply to all group health plans, such as coverage of dependents to age 26 and limits on annual out-of-pocket costs. Others apply only to large employers, such as the employer mandate.
A third group applies to insurance carriers, such as rating rules in the small group market. Employers feel those through renewals rather than through direct duties.
A practical way to use the ACA is as a checklist: what applies to every plan, what applies at your size and what comes from your carrier. That keeps the focus on the duties that fall on the employer.
