Three Oaks Benefits for Berrien County Employers

Three Oaks is a village of about 1,400 residents in southwest Michigan, within two miles of the Indiana line and about five miles from Lake Michigan. Local employers range from small shops and farms to craft producers and arts venues, and some employees may live on either side of the state line. We help Three Oaks employers build group health coverage that works across that border.

Three Oaks at a Glance

Three Oaks had 1,370 residents at the 2020 census. These are the facts that shape benefits planning for an employer in the village.

Location and Access

The village sits in Three Oaks Township, Berrien County, along US-12, about five miles from the Lake Michigan shore and within two miles of Indiana. Employees may live in Michigan or Indiana, so provider networks that reach both sides of the line matter when you choose a plan.

A Village With Visitors

A craft distillery and a theater share the historic Warren Featherbone Factory building. The June Flag Day parade is claimed to be the largest of its kind in the nation, and the Apple Cider Century bike ride on the last Sunday of September draws more than 6,000 riders. Employers who serve visitors often have seasonal or variable-hour staff.

Small Employers

Employers in a village of this size usually have a handful to a few dozen people on the plan. That makes group size thresholds, eligibility rules and contribution design the main levers for cost and fairness.

Plan Options for a Three Oaks Employer

Small groups usually compare a traditional fully insured plan with a level-funded plan, and larger groups can look at self-funding with stop-loss protection. We run each option against your census and claims data and show the tradeoffs side by side. We also review contribution strategy and plan tiers, which often move total cost as much as the carrier does.

Hiring Across the State Line

A Three Oaks employer competes with employers in nearby Michigan towns and with Indiana employers just over the border. A clear package with good network access and a simple enrollment process helps. We make sure your plan’s network fits where your employees actually live and see doctors, and we review the notices that apply to employees who live in another state.

Compliance Without a Compliance Department

At 50 full-time-equivalent employees an employer becomes an applicable large employer under the ACA, with offer and reporting duties, and a plan generally needs a Form 5500 filing once it passes 100 participants. We track your headcount against those lines so changes are planned in advance. See our Michigan benefits compliance guide for the yearly calendar.

Three Oaks, Michigan: Local Background for Employers

Settlement

Henry Chamberlain settled the area in 1850, and it was first called Chamberlain’s Siding. The village was renamed for three oak trees that served as a guidepoint for train engineers, and incorporated in 1867.

The Featherbone Factory

Edward Kirk Warren built the Featherbone Factory over a century ago to make quill-stripped turkey feather stiffeners for women’s garments. The building now houses a craft distillery and the Acorn Theater.

Local Landmarks

Dewey Cannon Park displays a cannon captured in the Spanish-American War and presented to the village in 1900, and the 1989 Christmas film Prancer was filmed largely in the village.
