BCBSM Wellness

Live webinars and a nurse line give employees a way to ask a question before they book a visit.

Blue Cross lists weekly webinars and guided meditations, a nurse line staffed by registered nurses around the clock, and a health blog as part of every medical plan. They cost the employer nothing extra, but they only help if employees know they exist.

What It Is

What the program is and what members do.

Blue Cross Virtual Well-Being

Blue Cross describes this as a resource with weekly, live and on-demand science-based well-being webinars and guided meditations. The Blue Cross Virtual Well-Being page describes 30-minute discussions on a different topic each week and says the sessions are open to the public. Members can watch live or use the recorded sessions on their own schedule.

The 24-Hour Nurse Line

Blue Cross says the Nurse Line gives members access to registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The nurses can give home health advice for symptoms or help a member decide whether to treat themselves or see a doctor. It is a navigation and advice service, not a visit with a physician.

AHealthierMichigan.org

Blue Cross also lists a blog site that shares information on topics from mental health to smoothie recipes and workout ideas. It is general reading rather than a personalized program. We treat it as a low-cost item for the communications calendar, not a core benefit.

Who Can Use It

Eligibility, funding and plan design.

Who can use it

Blue Cross says every one of its medical health plans includes the Well-Being resources, and the Nurse Line and Virtual Well-Being are listed in that group. The employer page applies to BCBSM and Blue Care Network customers, fully insured and self-funded alike. Confirm that your specific plan and any family members are covered.

How it is funded

These resources are presented as included, with no separate charge or opt-in listed on Blue Cross’s employer page. Nothing published says the employer buys a rider or pays per use. Where the contract says otherwise, the contract controls.

Where it fits in a plan design

The Nurse Line is most useful as a front door that can steer routine symptoms away from urgent care or the emergency room. Virtual Well-Being helps employers who want a recurring talking point for stress, sleep and mindfulness without a vendor contract. Neither one replaces an employee assistance program or a clinical care program.

What To Ask

What to settle before relying on it.

Does the Nurse Line number appear on the member ID card?

A line that employees cannot find does not get used. We would ask Blue Cross to confirm where the number appears on the ID card and in the member account, and put it on enrollment materials.

Can the webinar schedule support our workforce?

The Virtual Well-Being sessions are live at set times, with recordings available. If your employees work shifts or in the field, the on-demand library matters more than the live calendar. We would check how the recordings are organized and whether they work on a phone.

What counts as participation, and is anything tied to it?

Webinar attendance and nurse calls are not described by Blue Cross as reward events. If anyone proposes counting attendance toward a reward, that becomes an incentive design and falls under wellness rules. Have employment counsel review it first.

Questions We Get

Common questions about this program.

Is the 24-Hour Nurse Line free to members?

Blue Cross lists it as part of the well-being resources that every medical plan includes. Cost sharing for any follow-up care is a separate matter under the plan. Confirm the details for your plan with Blue Cross.

Can the nurses diagnose or prescribe?

Blue Cross describes the nurses as answering health care questions and giving home health advice or help deciding whether to self-treat or see a doctor. It does not describe diagnosis or prescribing. Employees should treat it as guidance.

Do the webinars require a Blue Cross login?

The Blue Cross Virtual Well-Being page says the webinars and meditations are open to the public. The nurse line and the personalized platform are for members. Check the current registration steps on the Blue Cross page before you publish them to employees.
