HAP puts a dedicated well-being consultant behind the program, but some services carry a cost.
HAP says employer groups get a dedicated well-being and health promotion consultant at no charge, with limitations. The value depends on which services are included and which are billed.
What the program is and what members do.
What HAP says the consultant provides
HAP says each employer gets a dedicated well-being and health promotion consultant who builds a program around small behavior changes that stick. HAP describes the delivery as turnkey programming, targeted interventions and the iStrive Digital Health Manager. The consultant is a planning and delivery resource, not a change to the medical benefit.
The listed service menu
HAP lists six support options: an employer interest survey, an annual well-being strategy, incentive design support, on-site and virtual programming, behavior change programs and employer group aggregate reporting. In practice that means the employer can start with a survey, agree on a yearly plan and then pick programming from the menu.
How the team works with an employer
HAP says its Well-being and Health Promotion team supports groups through planning, implementation and evaluation. Workshop and multi-week program topics include chronic disease prevention, stress management, physical activity, pain management, nutrition, and career and financial well-being, delivered as live webinars to support remote learning. Employers reach the team at wellness@hap.org.
Eligibility, funding and plan design.
Who can use it
HAP presents the service to its employer customers and says it focuses on the whole person across physical, mental, financial, and community and social health. HAP does not publish a group-size cutoff on its employer page. Its footnote says limitations apply, so eligibility should be confirmed for the specific group and plan.
How it is funded and sold
HAP lists the consultant at no charge, and then adds a footnote: limitations apply, some services are at a cost, services are subject to change and minimum participation rates apply for some services. HAP does not publish which services fall into which category, so the free label cannot be taken as covering the whole menu.
Where it fits in a plan design
The consultant sits beside the plan rather than inside it. It can support Reward Your Health incentives, the iStrive platform, challenges and on-site events, and it produces group-level reporting. For an employer without a wellness lead, it can supply structure. For one that already has a program, it may duplicate existing work.
What to settle before relying on it.
Which services in the menu are billed?
Ask HAP to mark each of the six listed services as included, billed or conditional, in writing. We would want that list before the consultant is counted as part of the carrier’s value in a renewal comparison. A free consultant with billed programming is a different proposition from a fully included one.
What participation minimums apply?
HAP says minimum participation rates apply for some services. Ask which services, and what the threshold is for a group of your size. A program that needs a participation rate the group is unlikely to reach is not a benefit, and it is better to learn that before the strategy is built around it.
What will the aggregate reporting actually show?
HAP lists employer group aggregate reporting. Ask for a sample report, how often it arrives and whether it shows engagement only or also health risk trends. Confirm that it reports at group level and does not expose individual health information, and agree what the employer will do with it.
Common questions about this program.
Is the HAP well-being consultant really free?
HAP says the consultant is provided at no charge, then notes that limitations apply and some services are at a cost. Ask HAP to identify which services in your proposal are billed.
Can a small employer use the consultant?
HAP does not publish a size requirement on its employer page, but it does say minimum participation rates apply for some services. Confirm with HAP what your group qualifies for.
Does the consultant replace a wellness vendor?
It can for groups that want a carrier-led program, since HAP lists strategy, programming and reporting. Employers with specific goals may still compare it with a stand-alone vendor.
