A Residential Township Is Still an Employer Market
Most Georgetown Township employers are small: contractors, professional practices, dental and medical offices, retail and service businesses. Their staff mostly live nearby and their competition for talent is the whole Grand Rapids metro, fifteen minutes up the road.
That combination means benefits are a recruiting instrument rather than a cost line to be minimized. A well-built package at a modest budget — visible employer money in an account, dental that covers major work, a disability benefit — competes better than a slightly richer medical plan nobody can evaluate.
The Grand Rapids Hospital Market Is the Real Network Question
There is no hospital in the township. University of Michigan Health-West in Wyoming and Corewell Health Zeeland are the nearest, with the full Grand Rapids complex — Corewell Health Butterworth and Blodgett, Helen DeVos Children’s and Trinity Health Grand Rapids — a short drive northeast.

That is a genuinely competitive market, which is good news for an employer here. It also means several hospital names have changed recently: Spectrum became Corewell, Metro Health became University of Michigan Health-West, and Mercy Health Saint Mary’s became Trinity Health Grand Rapids. Old provider lists mislead employees.
Plan Options for Township Employers
Fully Insured Plans
Community rating protects a small group with a poor claims year. Under about twenty-five lives it is frequently the right answer and we will say so.
Level-Funding for Stable Small Groups
A small township group with good claims can swap the pooled rate for a fixed monthly cost and a possible surplus refund, once the carrier underwrites it.
HSA Plans With a Visible Employer Deposit
Lower premium with a visible, portable employer contribution. Reads well to a younger suburban workforce.
Tiering Across Grand Rapids Hospitals
With several Grand Rapids systems competing, a tiered design can save real money. Check where your employees actually receive care first.
Rules Small Township Employers Miss
A Written Section 125 Document
Pre-tax premium deductions require a written cafeteria plan document. Small employers frequently deduct pre-tax without one.
How Fifty Is Counted
Full-time equivalents across commonly owned entities decide the employer mandate, not the headcount at one location.
Eligibility for Part-Timers
Put the part-time hours threshold in writing and use it every time; uneven eligibility is the mistake we find most often in small Ottawa County groups.
Affordability at the Lowest Full-Time Wage
Employers with fifty or more must pass affordability using the lowest-paid full-time employee’s wage, not an average.
Township Employers Ask Us
We are competing with Grand Rapids employers. What helps?
Package construction more than package cost. Visible employer money in an account and benefits people actually use compare better than an invisible premium subsidy.
Which network should we choose?
One that covers the Grand Rapids systems your employees actually use. With several competing systems close by, that question has a real answer in your claims data.
An Ottawa County Township Larger Than Most Cities
Georgetown Charter Township had 54,091 residents at the 2020 census, making it more populous than most Michigan cities despite being unincorporated. The community of Jenison, with about sixteen thousand six hundred residents, lies inside the township; Hudsonville is a separate incorporated city adjacent to it. Jenison Public Schools, headquartered on 20th Avenue, serves more than five thousand students with around 810 full-time-equivalent staff, and Hudsonville Public Schools — which serves parts of Georgetown along with several neighboring townships — has close to 893. The township government runs a library, cemetery, parks and recreation, a senior center, fire rescue and water and sewer services; policing is contracted to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and roads are maintained by the county road commission. There is no hospital in the township.
Two School Districts, One Township
Jenison and Hudsonville districts together are the largest institutional employers here. For a private employer, that is the local benefits benchmark.
Hudsonville Is Not in the Township
Jenison is inside Georgetown Township; Hudsonville is a separate city next door. Worth getting right in any local marketing.
Care Is in Wyoming and Grand Rapids
No hospital sits in the township. University of Michigan Health-West and the Grand Rapids systems are the practical options, and several have changed names recently.
Georgetown Township FAQs
Does CFH advise Georgetown Township and Jenison businesses?
Yes. CFH Insurance Consultants advises Georgetown Township and Jenison employers on group health insurance and employee benefits — plan design, carrier and funding comparisons, renewal negotiation, compliance and enrollment. We are licensed insurance brokers, and for proper coverage of an account we work in teams of five. Most engagements start with a review of your current plan and renewal.
Which hospitals do township employees use?
There is no hospital in the township. University of Michigan Health-West in Wyoming and Corewell Health Zeeland are the nearest, with the Grand Rapids complex a short drive northeast. Several of those hospitals were renamed recently, so provider lists more than a couple of years old will name systems that no longer exist under those names.
Is a CFH review useful if we already have a broker?
Yes, and it is free. You change nothing unless you choose to. We will show what drove your increase and how the Grand Rapids hospital market could price a tiered network. If you are already priced right, we will say so.
