Your Carrier and Plans
A broker change does not require a carrier change. The broker of record sits between you and the carrier.
Your carrier and plans can stay put.
The broker of record sits between you and the carrier. Changing it does not alter the policy, the plan design or the carrier contract. If your current plans are right, they stay.
Whether to also market the plan or change carriers is a separate question, and you decide it with the facts from a review in hand.
What Stays the Same.
Carriers, plan designs and rates all belong to the contract between you and the carrier. A broker change does not alter them. The broker sits beside that relationship as your adviser and point of service.
If you want to keep your current plans, you can. A new broker may suggest options, but nothing changes without your decision.
It is worth saying so explicitly when you talk to a broker: ask them to leave plans as they are until you have reviewed their recommendations.
A few more questions.
Can I keep my current plans and just change brokers?
Yes. A broker change does not require any plan change.
Will my rates change because of the switch?
Not by themselves. Rates are set by the carrier at renewal.
Can the new broker propose a different carrier?
Yes, if they think it is in your interest, and you decide.
Do we need to re-quote everything?
No. Many employers keep plans as they are.
Will the new broker know our plans?
They will review the documents and the carrier’s records.
