Every fall, schools hear the same questions. Does this student need our plan? Is their parents’ plan good enough? What does an international student need to arrive? CFH Insurance Consultants helps schools and programs looking for student health insurance in Bloomfield Hills and across Michigan get clear answers before the semester starts.
We are an independent benefits consulting firm on Woodward Avenue, in business since 2007. No carrier owns us, so we can compare student plans side by side.
Student health insurance is a plan a college, university or program offers to its students. Under federal rules it is a form of individual coverage, and most plans must meet the Affordable Care Act’s core consumer protections. That means no lifetime limits on essential benefits and coverage for preventive care.
Most schools that offer a plan also require proof of coverage. Students who already have a plan they like can ask for a waiver. The school sets the rules for what counts as comparable coverage. We help you write those rules so they are fair and easy to check.
We help with:
Not always. Young adults can stay on a parent’s plan until age 26. The catch is the network. A parent’s plan built around Metro Detroit doctors may cover very little near a campus in another state, except emergencies. That is often the real reason a student needs the school plan, or a different one.
International students often have extra rules. Exchange visitors on J-1 visas must carry insurance that meets federal minimums. For F-1 students, the school usually sets the requirement. We help programs check that the plan they offer meets the rules that apply to their students.
Several months before the fall term. Waiver deadlines and enrollment windows fall early in the semester, so the plan needs to be settled well ahead. Working back from the waiver deadline leaves time to compare carriers, settle the waiver criteria and get plan materials to students and parents before move-in. International students may need proof of coverage even earlier, before they arrive.
Yes, usually at renewal. We compare options and plan the change so students are not confused mid-year. Plan the change around the waiver cycle, so students are measured against the same comparable-coverage standard under the new plan, and get the new cards and network information out before the term starts.
Our office is in Bloomfield Hills, and we work with schools and programs across Michigan. Ask us about other states. We also have offices in Colorado Springs and Houston, and the comparison work itself does not depend on where the school is located.
