Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Hospital indemnity insurance in Bloomfield Hills for the bills a hospital stay leaves behind

Hospital indemnity coverage pays a fixed cash amount when an employee is admitted to the hospital, and often a daily amount for each day they stay. It is one of the voluntary benefits that fills the gap a higher deductible creates.

A single admission can use up most of an employee’s deductible and a large part of the out-of-pocket maximum. Hospital indemnity pays a set amount regardless of what the stay cost, and the employee decides where it goes.

Hospital indemnity insurance

Plans pay a lump sum on admission and a per-day benefit for the stay, with some adding amounts for intensive care, observation stays or childbirth. Employees usually pay through payroll, and coverage is commonly offered without health questions during enrollment.

When does it make sense?

When you have moved to a higher deductible or are considering it. Offering hospital indemnity alongside the change gives employees a way to protect against the largest single out-of-pocket event, and it can make a higher-deductible plan easier to accept. It is part of how we design the whole package.

What should we compare between plans?

Whether childbirth is covered and when, how observation stays are treated, any waiting period for pre-existing conditions, and the daily benefit limit. A low price with a narrow admission definition pays out far less often than the brochure suggests.

Questions We Get

Common questions

Is hospital indemnity the same as medical insurance?

No. It pays a fixed cash amount, not the hospital bill, and it does not meet ACA minimum coverage on its own. Because it pays per admission or per day, employees choose how to use the money, from the deductible to household bills while they recover. It is designed to sit alongside a group medical plan, not to replace one.

Does it cover childbirth?

Many plans do, sometimes after a waiting period. It is one of the first things to check. Look at whether the waiting period applies to a pregnancy already under way at enrollment, and whether a newborn’s own stay counts as a separate admission. Those two terms decide whether the plan pays out when employees expect it to.

Can employees keep it if they leave?

Many plans offer portability at similar rates. We confirm it before you choose a carrier. Portability means the employee keeps the policy by paying the carrier directly. Check how long they have to elect it after leaving and whether dependents stay covered as well.
