Legal Plans

Legal plans in Bloomfield Hills that give employees an attorney before a problem grows

A group legal plan gives employees access to a network of attorneys for everyday personal legal matters for a flat monthly payroll deduction. It is one of the voluntary benefits employees use more than employers expect.

Most people put off a will, ignore a landlord dispute or sign a contract unread because a lawyer feels too expensive to call. A legal plan removes that barrier, and problems that are handled early rarely become the ones that follow someone to work.

Legal plans

Plans typically cover wills and estate documents, real estate closings, consumer and debt matters, traffic offenses, family law advice and document review, either fully or at reduced hourly rates depending on the matter. Coverage usually extends to a spouse and dependents.

How is this different from the attorneys we give our clients?

Our clients get access to CPAs and attorneys for the business’s own benefits and compliance questions. A legal plan is for employees’ personal matters. The two do different jobs and do not overlap.

What should we check before offering one?

How many network attorneys practice near your employees, which matters are fully covered versus discounted, and any waiting periods. A plan with a thin local network gets enrolled in and then not used.

Questions We Get

Common questions

Is a legal plan employer-paid?

Usually it is employee-paid through payroll. Employer-paid legal coverage is generally taxable to the employee. Payroll deduction keeps the cost low for the employee, and the employer’s cost is mostly setup. If the employer does pay, the value is added to the employee’s taxable wages, so an employer-paid version is best treated as a deliberate perk rather than a default.

Does it cover business or work disputes?

No. It covers personal matters, not disputes with the employer. Plans also commonly exclude matters tied to the employee’s own business or a dispute already underway before enrolling. We check each plan’s exclusions before it goes on the enrollment, so the materials say plainly what an attorney can and cannot help with, and HR is not left explaining a denied request.

Can family members use it?

Most plans cover a spouse and dependents. Coverage typically extends to dependent children as well, and some plans also help with an aging parent’s matters, such as reviewing a care facility contract or a power of attorney. Family use is often where the value shows, since a teenager’s traffic ticket or a spouse’s estate documents fall under the same deduction.
