UnitedHealthcare layers app-based mental health tools and coaching on top of the plan’s therapy benefit.
The carrier lists self-service tools, coaching, an employee assistance program and a substance use helpline. They sit beside the plan’s therapy and psychiatry benefit and do not replace it.
What the program is and what members do.
Self-service tools and the helpline
UnitedHealthcare lists the Calm Health app, with mindfulness programs designed by psychologists, guided meditation, relaxation and sleep tools, stress and resilience programs and progress tracking. It also lists a 24-hour Substance Use Helpline that gives members and their families private, anonymous support from a recovery advocate at no extra cost through the plan.
Coaching programs
Virtual Behavioral Coaching offers private weekly one-on-one sessions with a dedicated coach to help with stress, feeling overwhelmed or exhaustion. Bend Health provides child and family coaching for children aged 1 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 25, with monthly online sessions, unlimited messaging between sessions and referrals to a therapist or psychiatrist if more support is needed.
EAP and family support
UnitedHealthcare describes Employee Assistance Programs as confidential support for personal or work-related concerns, with 24/7 access, referrals to licensed professionals and short-term counseling at no additional cost. The Family Support Program helps caregivers of children aged 0 to 17 with mental health needs build care plans and manage hospital-to-home transitions.
Eligibility, funding and plan design.
Who can use it
UnitedHealthcare says coverage depends on the specific health plan. It lists Calm Health and the helpline for members generally, and presents Virtual Behavioral Coaching, Bend Health, EAP and the Family Support Program as additional programs that may be available to members with plans through work. Each carries its own eligibility check.
How it is funded
UnitedHealthcare says these resources may be covered at no additional cost for members with plans through work. The word may matters: the pages reviewed do not say which are standard, which are optional or how any of them are priced. Treat the EAP in particular as something to confirm in the proposal rather than assume.
Where it fits in plan design
Coaching and apps address early and mild needs, and UnitedHealthcare says behavioral health programs such as coaching can be used on their own or alongside other care. Therapy, psychiatry and higher levels of care stay under the plan’s behavioral health benefit. The programs help most when employees can move from coaching to treatment without a gap.
What to settle before relying on it.
Which of these programs are in our plan, and which are separate purchases?
Get a program-by-program list. For the EAP, ask how many short-term counseling sessions are included, who delivers them, and whether the EAP is bundled or bought separately. Employees tend to assume everything on a carrier website applies to them, so the answer should be exact.
How does a member move from coaching to treatment?
Ask how coaches refer to network therapists or psychiatrists, what wait times look like in the group’s area, and whether virtual therapy visits are covered under the plan. A coaching program that stops at a referral can leave employees without care. We would test the path with a sample search.
What will the employer see, and how is confidentiality handled?
Ask for utilization by program, at group level only, and how often it is reported. Individual use of mental health services is confidential, and employers should not expect names. Use the aggregate data to decide which programs deserve promotion at open enrollment and which do not.
Common questions about this program.
Is there a helpline for substance use?
UnitedHealthcare lists a 24-hour Substance Use Helpline for members and their families, private and anonymous, with a recovery advocate. The number on the carrier page is 1-855-780-5955.
Who can use Bend Health coaching?
UnitedHealthcare describes it for families with children aged 1 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 25. Members check eligibility through their account, because it depends on the plan.
Does the EAP include counseling?
UnitedHealthcare says its EAP offers 24/7 access, referrals to licensed professionals and short-term counseling at no additional cost. Whether the group’s plan includes an EAP, and how many sessions, should be confirmed with the carrier.
