Why look at dependent coverage cost?

For many employers, dependent coverage is close to half of plan spending. Because each tier carries a different premium, the cost of adding a spouse or children is the amount above the employee-only rate. Seeing that number helps an employer decide how much to contribute toward dependents and what that means for employees with families.

What choices does an employer have?

An employer can contribute the same share across tiers, contribute less for dependents, use a flat dollar amount, or change the tier structure. Each choice shifts cost between employees. The right balance depends on your workforce, your market and your goals for attraction and retention. Modeling the options before changing them shows the effect.

Questions We Get

Common questions

Does the ACA require us to pay for dependent coverage?

The ACA requires large employers to offer coverage to full-time employees and their dependent children, but not to pay a set amount for dependents. Review the rules with your advisor.

Is this the same as the spousal surcharge?

No. A spousal surcharge adds a charge for spouses who have other coverage. This calculator shows the base cost of dependent coverage.

Can we contribute different shares by tier?

Yes. Employers often contribute a smaller share for dependents. Apply the design consistently and follow the plan document.

How do I model a new contribution?

Use our employer contribution calculator to test options.
