This calculator gives an estimate only. It uses a simple deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum model and ignores copays and tax effects. Check your plan documents.

Why the lower premium is not always cheaper

A plan with a low paycheck premium usually has a higher deductible and higher coinsurance. If you use little care, that trade is a good one. If you expect a surgery, a pregnancy or ongoing treatment, the richer plan often wins even with a bigger premium.

Look at the worst case too

Total cost at your expected spending is only half the picture. The worst case adds a full year of premiums to the out-of-pocket maximum. If you could not handle the higher worst case, that may matter more than the expected saving. HSA-eligible plans also give you a tax-advantaged way to set money aside.

Questions We Get

Common questions

What spending number should I use?

Think about prescriptions, scheduled visits and any planned procedures, then add a cushion. Last year spending is a reasonable starting point if your health is stable.

Why does the tool ignore copays?

To keep it simple. Many plans use copays for visits and prescriptions, so your real cost may be lower than shown. Use your plan summary for a closer estimate.

Does this include employer HSA or HRA money?

No. If your employer funds an HSA or HRA, subtract that amount from the plan that offers it.

Can I use this for family coverage?

Yes. Use the family premium and the family deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, and enter total household spending.
