Cigna Wellness

Cigna’s EAP covers counseling, work-life help and manager support, and Cigna cites a 24 percent drop in avoidable ER visits when it is integrated.

Cigna describes its EAP as confidential support for employees and household members, with services for managers and the employer. The published results are Cigna’s own and should be read that way.

Ask What Your Carrier Offers

What It Is

What the program is and what members do.

What the program is

Cigna says employees and anyone in their household get confidential access to EAP support. The employer also receives organizational services, including help with traumatic events and support for managers and HR. Cigna notes EAP services are in addition to, not instead of, health plan benefits.

What members do

Cigna lists 24/7/365 live assistance and crisis triage, face-to-face and telehealth counseling with a nationwide network, and legal, financial and identity theft consultations. Members can also get referrals for childcare, eldercare, pet care and similar work-life needs. Cigna says access runs through myCigna.

What managers and the employer get

Cigna lists manager consultation and crisis support, webcasts, and an annual bank of service hours for critical incident response, seminars or training. It also lists quarterly reports and a reporting portal. Fitness-for-duty and DOT or DOE substance abuse professional evaluations are available at additional cost, according to Cigna.

Who Can Use It

Eligibility, funding and plan design.

Who can use it

Cigna says program availability may vary by plan type and location, and that EAP is not available where prohibited by law. It tells employers to contact their representative or broker. Cigna’s page is also not intended for certain states, so a Michigan group should confirm directly.

How it is funded or sold

Cigna says EAP services are separate from health plan benefits. Cigna’s page lists some services at additional cost, and describes its Confide Behavioral Health Navigator as a premium solution. Employers should ask which parts are in the base EAP fee and which are extras.

Where it fits in a plan design

An EAP is usually a low-cost add that gives employees a first, no-cost door to counseling, and gives managers a place to send hard situations. Cigna cites better results when EAP is integrated with its medical and behavioral benefits, so it fits best with the carrier’s other coverage.

What To Ask

What to settle before relying on it.

What do the published figures actually measure?

Cigna cites 24 percent fewer avoidable ER visits from a 2020 study and says 100 percent of EAP services are delivered by in-network behavioral providers. It also cites a 2022 study showing 57 percent lower out-of-network behavioral use for clients with full EAP. These are Cigna findings and results may vary, so we would not use them as a projection.

How many counseling sessions are covered?

Cigna describes up to 12 counseling sessions per issue at no cost with its Confide navigator, which it calls a premium solution. We would ask what the standard EAP includes, what the session limit is, and what happens when more care is needed.

What is the utilization plan?

EAP use is often low without promotion. Cigna lists a tailored communication plan and promotional tools. We would ask what the employer receives, how often utilization is reported, and who handles launch, since an unused EAP gives no return. A quiet EAP is the usual outcome without a communication plan.
