Employee benefits in Michigan are priced differently than you think.
Michigan rates small group per member and forbids a standard family tier, which means the rate build-up you were shown does not work the way most national advice assumes. We are a Michigan employee benefits consulting firm in Bloomfield Hills, serving employers across the whole state, and our licensing follows clients well beyond it.
What is actually different about buying benefits here.
Three things, and all three are checkable against the state regulator rather than taken on trust.
Per-Member Rating, No Family Tier
Michigan mandates per-member rating and forbids a standard family tier. So an employer here cannot simply compare a four-tier quote against a national benchmark and call it like for like. The census drives the number in a way it does not in every state.
The Filed Rates Are Public
The Department of Insurance and Financial Services publishes every carrier filing for the individual and small group markets. Statewide small group was approved at 11.1 percent for 2026, with 9.6 percent proposed for 2027. If you are under about 50 enrolled contracts, that filed figure is not context. It is very close to your actual rate.
Three Rating Factors and No More
Rating area, age at a three to one band, and tobacco at one and a half to one. That is the permitted list for small group. Anything else you are told moved your rate either did not, or belongs to a different market than the one you are buying in.
Figures from Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services rate filings. Large group above 50 is not required to file, and the department has no authority over self-funded rates, so neither figure describes those employers.
The number quoted at Michigan employers is usually the wrong one.
The individual market and the small group market are different markets, filed separately, and they move differently.
Small Group
Approved at 11.1 percent for 2026. Proposed at 9.6 percent for 2027. Those are averages across carriers. Your own renewal can land well above or below them, depending on your census and, above a certain size, your claims. Read yours against both.
Individual
Approved at 20.2 percent for 2026. Proposed at 14.2 percent for 2027. The individual market is what employees face if a group plan goes away, which is why its rate matters to an employer at all. Watch it alongside your own.
Those are roughly nine points apart, and the individual figure is the one that reaches the news. An employer told to brace for twenty percent has been quoted a market they are not buying in.
Your headcount is how you found this page. It is not what sets your rate.
What sets the mix is enrolled contracts on your medical plan, which is a different number and usually a smaller one.
By Company Size
The lever changes completely across the range. Under fifty contracts the rate is filed and the work is elsewhere. Past a few hundred, shopping starts to weaken. 2 to 50 · 51 to 249 · 250 to 999 · 1,000 and up

What Michigan employers ask about employee benefits.
Who are the best employee benefits consultants in Michigan?
Judge it on method rather than reputation. Ask when renewal work starts, whether your plan is taken to the wider market each year and whether you are shown the options that were declined, whether you receive claims and benchmarking data through the year, who owns Form 5500 and your ERISA plan documents by name, and how the firm is paid on your account. Those answers separate firms; adjectives do not.
How much does employee health insurance cost in Michigan?
For 2026, Michigan small group carriers filed for an average increase of 11.1 percent, approved by the state regulator, with 9.6 percent proposed for 2027. As a benchmark for the underlying cost, national averages for firms of 10 to 199 workers ran about 9,211 dollars a year for employee-only coverage and 26,054 dollars for family. Your own number depends on your census, your region within Michigan and your funding model.
What is the difference between the Michigan individual and small group rate increases?
They are separate markets with separate filings, and the gap is wide enough to mislead. Small group was approved at 11.1 percent for 2026 against 20.2 percent for the individual market. The individual figure is the one that tends to reach the news, so an employer bracing for twenty percent has usually been quoted a market they are not buying in.
Does Michigan require employers to offer health insurance?
No. The obligation comes from federal law, at 50 or more full-time equivalent employees, where the ACA employer mandate requires an offer of affordable minimum-value coverage. Michigan adds no state-level coverage mandate, but it has added a paid sick time obligation that starts at a far lower headcount than any federal rule.
How is small group health insurance rated in Michigan?
Per member, and Michigan forbids a standard family tier. The permitted rating factors are rating area, age at a three to one band, and tobacco at one and a half to one. Rates are filed with and approved by the Department of Insurance and Financial Services before the year starts, which is why an employer under about fifty enrolled contracts has very little room to negotiate the medical rate itself.
