Two workforces, one plan year
Grand Haven reads as a beach town and runs as a manufacturing town. Roughly 22% of employed city residents work in manufacturing — about double the national share — followed by health care and retail. The Coast Guard Festival and the summer season add a retail, hospitality and marina layer on top of that base.
That seasonal layer is where the compliance risk sits. Variable-hour and seasonal staff drive four things most employers here get wrong: full-time-equivalent counting for Applicable Large Employer status, the seasonal worker exception to that determination, look-back measurement periods for employees whose hours swing by month, and rehire and waiting-period rules for staff who come back every May.
What we work on in Grand Haven
Seasonal and variable-hour compliance
Measurement, administrative and stability periods documented properly — and applied consistently to returning seasonal staff, which is where most employers slip.
Medicare coordination
28.6% of Grand Haven residents are 65 or older. Active-employee Medicare Secondary Payer rules, retiree medical, and group Medicare Advantage come up here far more than in a typical Michigan market.
Self-funding for manufacturers
Stop-loss placement, laser review, and claims-driven renewal analysis for plants large enough to carry their own risk.
Plan transitions after ownership change
When a company is acquired, benefits get re-bid and harmonized. We represent the employer’s people through that, not the acquirer’s spreadsheet.
Your hospital is Trinity Health — and your vendor data may not know it
Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital at 1309 Sheldon Road is an 81-bed acute care hospital serving northwest Ottawa County and southern Muskegon County. It was North Ottawa Community Hospital until it joined Trinity Health Michigan and was renamed on October 5, 2022, bringing more than 650 colleagues into the system.
Employers looking beyond the next quote can start with our health and cost strategy for fully insured plans.
Here is the practical trap. The federal CMS record for that facility still carries the legal name “North Ottawa Community Hospital” and an ownership type of “Government — Hospital District or Authority,” a leftover from the era when it was a municipal hospital. Provider directories, network files and price-transparency tools built on CMS data can therefore show your local hospital under a name that has not been used since 2022. We have seen employees conclude their hospital is out-of-network because of it. Worth knowing before open enrollment, not during it.
Trinity Health Muskegon is the larger regional hospital roughly 15 miles north, and Corewell Health’s West Michigan hospitals sit in the Grand Rapids and Zeeland corridor.
Who employs people in the Tri-Cities
Shape Corp. is the area’s largest manufacturer — a Tier 1 automotive supplier headquartered in Grand Haven Township, working in crash management, bumper systems and EV underbody battery protection, with well over a thousand employees in Ottawa County. Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital is the anchor healthcare employer. Grand Haven Area Public Schools spans more than 100 square miles.
Two changes worth knowing about, because they affect real people locally. JSJ Corporation, the 106-year-old Grand Haven family office, has exited all of its operating holdings. Its last one, GHSP — founded in Grand Haven in 1924 as Grand Haven Stamped Products — was sold to Center Rock Capital Partners in a deal announced in November 2025. GHSP is now headquartered in Holland with a production facility still in Grand Haven, and in February 2026 it absorbed Stoneridge’s Control Devices business, roughly doubling in size. Leadership stated at the time of sale that no staff reductions were planned.
Separately, NPR of America filed a WARN notice on August 12, 2025 for a Grand Haven closure affecting 64 employees. Ottawa County employment stood at 126,900 jobs in March 2026, down about half a percent year over year. This is not a boom market, and we would rather say so than sell you a growth story.
Quick Answers From Grand Haven Employers
How do seasonal employees affect our ACA obligations?
Two ways. First, in determining whether you are an Applicable Large Employer, there is a seasonal worker exception: if you exceed 50 full-time equivalents for 120 days or fewer in a calendar year and the excess is entirely seasonal workers, you may not be an ALE. Second, if you are an ALE, seasonal and variable-hour employees need a documented look-back measurement period so you know who must be offered coverage and when. Rehire rules for staff who return each season are a common failure point.
Our hospital shows up under an old name in the carrier directory. Is that a problem?
It is a known artifact rather than a network problem. Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital was North Ottawa Community Hospital until October 2022, and its federal CMS record still carries the former legal name and an outdated government-ownership classification. Vendor data built on CMS files can reflect that. Confirm network status with the carrier directly, and tell employees before open enrollment so nobody assumes their hospital was dropped.
A lot of our workforce is near retirement age. What should we be planning for?
In Grand Haven that is the norm rather than the exception — 28.6% of city residents are 65 or older. The main areas are Medicare Secondary Payer rules for employees who stay on the group plan past 65, how your plan coordinates with Medicare Parts A and B, whether a group Medicare Advantage arrangement makes sense for retirees, and creditable coverage notices for prescription drug benefits, which carry a firm annual deadline.
Our company was just acquired. When should we talk to you?
Before the first renewal under new ownership, not after. Acquirers typically harmonize benefits across their portfolio on a set timeline, and the window where an employer can influence what its own people end up with is early and short.
Does a Grand Haven renewal review cost anything?
No. Send the current plan documents and renewal. We will tell you what we would change and what we would leave alone.
