Grosse Pointe Farms Benefits Consulting for Professional Offices

Grosse Pointe Farms is an affluent lakefront city with no industrial base and very few large workplaces. Employment here is schools, municipal services including its own public safety department, private clubs, outpatient health care, and the professional and retail businesses along Kercheval on The Hill and on Mack Avenue. Most residents work somewhere else.

Professional Practices Are the Local Employer

Law firms, accounting practices, dental and medical offices and investment advisers make up much of the private employment on The Hill and along Mack. They share a pattern: a small number of high earners, a larger number of administrative and clinical staff, and a benefits program designed around the owners and then applied to everyone.

That is expensive and, above fifty full-time equivalents, occasionally non-compliant. Defining benefit classes properly — by role, by hours — lets you fund a partner tier differently from a staff tier inside one plan. It is a document exercise rather than a carrier negotiation, and most practices have never had it done.

Two Hospitals, Neither One in the City

Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe, with 280 beds, is in the neighboring City of Grosse Pointe. Henry Ford St. John, with 586 beds, is immediately adjacent in Detroit. The Farms itself has an outpatient center and emergency department rather than a hospital.

Both of those hospitals have changed names recently — Beaumont became Corewell Health, and Ascension St. John became Henry Ford St. John in the joint venture completed in autumn 2024. The city’s own published information still uses the old names, and so do a great many employee materials.

Plan Structures for Partners and Staff

Fully Insured for Small Practices

Community rating protects a small practice with an unlucky claims year. Under about twenty-five lives it is frequently the right answer.

Level Funding for a Healthy Office

If a small practice runs healthier than its pool, level funding stops that subsidy at a predictable monthly cost and may pay back a surplus. Underwriting is part of it.

Funding Partners and Staff by Class

Fund partners, licensed staff and administration at different rates inside one plan, documented properly, rather than overfunding everyone.

An HSA Plan for Higher Earners

Lower premium with a visible, portable employer contribution. Suits a professional population that uses little routine care.

Compliance for Small Professional Practices

Related Practices Under Common Ownership

A practice with an affiliated management company or a second entity may be a single employer for benefits purposes, changing both the count and the testing.

A Cafeteria Plan Before Pre-Tax Deductions

Deducting premiums pre-tax requires a written cafeteria plan document, and small practices more often than not deduct without one.

Affordability Tested at the Lowest Wage

Once you are at fifty or above, affordability is measured against your lowest-paid full-time employee rather than the average.

A Written Rule for Part-Time Staff

Put the hours threshold in writing and apply it the same way every time.

What Grosse Pointe Farms Practices Ask Us

Can partners and support staff be funded at different levels?

Yes, within limits, and it usually saves money. Benefit classes defined by role or hours let you set different employer contributions inside one plan. It has to be written into the plan document and it has to pass the tests.

Our people use St. John. Is it still in network?

Under its new name, yes — it is Henry Ford St. John now. Anything in your plan materials still saying Ascension St. John is simply out of date, not a coverage change. Employers with 20 or more employees are generally required to offer COBRA continuation coverage when someone leaves the plan.

Who Employs Grosse Pointe Farms

Schools, Clubs and Professional Practices

Grosse Pointe Farms had 10,148 residents at the 2020 census. The Grosse Pointe Public School System is the largest employer in the city; district-wide it runs twelve schools with roughly 872 full-time-equivalent staff for about sixty-five hundred students across all five Pointes and part of Harper Woods, with Kerby and Père Gabriel Richard elementary schools, Brownell Middle School and Grosse Pointe South High School located in the Farms. The Country Club of Detroit is the second largest employer. City government runs its own public safety department and Pier Park. Henry Ford Medical Center – Cottage on Kercheval provides outpatient care and an emergency department. The nearest hospitals are Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe with 280 beds in the neighboring City of Grosse Pointe, and Henry Ford St. John with 586 beds immediately adjacent in Detroit.

Outdated Hospital Names on the City’s Site

Grosse Pointe Farms still lists Ascension St. John and Beaumont Grosse Pointe. Both names have changed. Check your own materials for the same problem.

No Hospital in the Farms

Cottage is an outpatient center with an emergency department, not a hospital. The inpatient facilities are next door in Grosse Pointe and Detroit.

Small Employers, High Expectations

A practice of a dozen people here recruits against institutional packages. Package construction competes better than package cost.

Common Grosse Pointe Farms Renewal Questions

Does CFH work with practices in Grosse Pointe Farms?

Yes. We advise Grosse Pointe Farms employers on plan design, carrier and funding comparisons, renewal negotiation, compliance and enrollment. We are licensed insurance brokers, and for proper coverage of an account we work in teams of five. We usually begin with your current plan and renewal.

Which hospitals serve the Grosse Pointes?

Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe, with 280 beds, is in the City of Grosse Pointe, and Henry Ford St. John, with 586 beds, is immediately adjacent in Detroit. Both were renamed recently — Beaumont became Corewell Health, and Ascension St. John became Henry Ford St. John in autumn 2024 — so older plan documents and provider lists carry names that no longer exist.

Will you review our renewal while our broker remains in place?

Yes, free of charge and with nothing changing unless you decide. We will show what makes up the increase and whether the market can improve on it; if your plan is fairly priced, we will say so.

Partners and staff on one plan design that suits neither? See what moving to CFH involves.
