Employee Benefits for Cadillac and Wexford County Manufacturers

Cadillac, Michigan, the Wexford County seat and manufacturing town

Cadillac Benefits Consulting for Casting, Rubber and Machining Payrolls

Cadillac is a manufacturing town more than a quarter of whose labor force works in manufacturing — automotive rubber and sealing, ductile iron casting, defense protective equipment, aerospace components and consumer durables. It is also the Wexford County seat and a four-season recreation destination, and it is currently absorbing the loss of a large recreational boatbuilding employer.

When a Large Local Employer Closes

Rec Boat Holdings is halting production at its Cadillac plant in August 2026, ending 232 jobs, after recreational boat orders fell sharply. In a city of ten thousand that is a labor-market event, and other local manufacturers have publicly moved to recruit the displaced workers.

For an employer hiring into that, two things matter. Waiting periods and entry dates written for steady hiring behave badly under a surge, and a group that crosses fifty full-time equivalents mid-year acquires obligations without any announcement. Both are cheap to fix before the hiring and expensive to fix after. A consistent new-hire onboarding process is what gets eligible employees enrolled on time.

A Foundry and Machining Payroll Has Its Own Profile

Casting, rubber and machining workforces tend to be older, more physically worked and more likely to carry musculoskeletal claims than a regional average. That shows up in the experience and in what employees actually value: a predictable deductible, real physical therapy coverage, and a short-term disability benefit that pays when someone cannot lift.

Shift patterns also make enrollment harder. An emailed link does not reach a second shift. On-site or phone-based enrollment costs something and pays for itself in accuracy.

Funding Options for a Wexford County Plant

Fully Insured While Headcount Settles

Fixed rate, no claims exposure. Where the census is moving or the claims history is thin, this is often the correct answer and we will say so.

Level Funding for a Steady Workforce

A healthy manufacturer stops subsidizing a pooled rate, at a fixed monthly cost with a possible surplus return. Check how the contract treats a large headcount change.

Self-Funding With a Stop-Loss Cap

Realistic from roughly a hundred lives. Where the workforce skews older, the specific attachment point and laser provisions deserve close reading.

Two Plans for Plant and Salaried Staff

A richer plan alongside a low-deduction plan lets office and shop-floor staff self-select. It usually lifts participation more than a contribution increase.

Compliance When Hiring Surges

Crossing Fifty in the Middle of the Year

Full-time equivalents across commonly owned entities decide the employer mandate. Hiring a dozen people quickly can cross the line mid-year.

Look-Back Measurement for Production Hours

Production staff on variable hours need the look-back measurement, administrative and stability periods written down before hiring starts.

Continuation Coverage After a Closure

Election notices, timing and qualifying-event dates all get tested in a shutdown. Getting a notice out late is an expensive error.

When the Form 5500 Comes Due

A plan that reaches a hundred participants must file Form 5500 with Schedule A, and the wrap document and summary plan description need to be in place before it does.

Questions Cadillac Managers Ask

We are about to hire twenty people. What breaks first?

Eligibility, then the fifty-employee threshold. A waiting period and entry-date structure written for steady hiring is the first thing to revisit before a surge, not after it.

Does an older plant workforce lock in our rate?

Age is a rating factor you cannot negotiate away, but it is not the whole renewal. Plan design, funding structure and whether you are paying for pooled risk you are not contributing to are all still open.

Who Employs Cadillac

A Manufacturing Town in Wexford County

Cadillac had 10,371 residents at the 2020 census and is the seat of Wexford County; more than a quarter of the city’s labor force works in manufacturing, and regional profiles note that all of the county’s largest employers sit inside the city. Cadillac Area Public Schools is the largest single employer. Avon Automotive makes rubber and sealing components, Avon Protection Systems builds respiratory and CBRN protection equipment for defense customers, Cadillac Casting runs a ductile iron foundry, Rexair manufactures home cleaning systems and expanded its Cadillac plant with state support, and AAR Manufacturing produces aviation cargo and defense systems. Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital, a 49-bed facility operating since 1908, is one of only ten Michigan hospitals holding a five-star overall CMS quality rating. Rec Boat Holdings, long one of the city’s largest private employers, is ending production in August 2026 with the loss of 232 jobs.

A 49-Bed Hospital Means Referrals Travel

Munson Cadillac handles a great deal locally, but complex care goes to Traverse City or further. Out-of-area provisions deserve real weight in any comparison.

The Published Employer Lists Are Out of Date

The most commonly cited Cadillac employer rankings are years old and still list the boat plant near the top. Benchmark against something current.

Displaced Workers Are Available

Two hundred and thirty-two experienced manufacturing workers enter this market in 2026. For a hiring employer that is an opportunity with an eligibility question attached.

Things Cadillac Employers Ask First

Does CFH take on Cadillac employers?

Yes. We advise Cadillac employers on plan design, carrier and funding comparisons, renewal negotiation, compliance and enrollment. We are licensed insurance brokers, and for proper coverage of an account we work in teams of five. Our first step is usually the plan and renewal you have now.

We are hiring quickly. What should we check first?

Your waiting period and entry-date rules, and your full-time-equivalent count. Rapid hiring can push an employer past fifty full-time equivalents mid-year, which triggers the employer mandate, and a waiting-period structure written for steady hiring tends to create eligibility gaps under a surge. Both are straightforward to fix in advance.

Can you look over our renewal while we keep our broker?

Yes. It is free and binds you to nothing. We will show you what the increase is made of and whether the market can do better, and if the program is priced correctly, we will say that too.
