A General-Purpose Flexible Account Blocks Health Savings Contributions
If an employee is enrolled in a high-deductible plan and intends to contribute to a health savings account, being covered by a general-purpose flexible spending account disqualifies them from contributing at all. Not partially. Entirely, for the whole period concerned.
What makes it worse is how easily it happens. A spouse’s flexible account at another employer can disqualify your employee, because the coverage is what counts rather than whose name is on it. Neither person knows, contributions go in through the year, and the correction involves withdrawing money and amending a tax return.
The Fix Is Simple and Has to Be in Place Beforehand
Offer a limited-purpose flexible account alongside the high-deductible plan
restricted to dental and vision, which does not disqualify anyone
Ask at enrollment whether a spouse carries a general-purpose account elsewhere
which nobody thinks to ask
Explain a Carryover or Grace Period Clearly
since an unspent balance rolling into the next year can extend the disqualification into it
Get the design right before the plan year opens
because this cannot be repaired retrospectively
Related Traps in the Same Family
A reimbursement arrangement funded by the employer can disqualify health savings contributions in the same way unless it is designed as a limited or post-deductible arrangement. And an employee who enrolls in Medicare loses the ability to contribute from that point, which catches people who work past sixty-five without changing anything else about their coverage.
What Else Applies to an Employer This Size
Continuation Coverage From Twenty on Payroll
with no Michigan requirement beneath that threshold
The Offer-Of-Coverage Duty at Fifty Full-Time
The offer-of-coverage duty at fifty full-time equivalents averaged across the prior calendar year
Medicare-eligible staff get the creditable-coverage notice before mid-October each year
at any employer size
A reimbursement arrangement generally brings a per-covered-life fee each July
which surprises employers who consider themselves insured
Questions From Macomb County Employers
Our employees love the savings account. Should we drop the flexible account?
Not necessarily — switch it to a limited-purpose version. That keeps the dental and vision benefit and removes the conflict entirely.
Whose responsibility is it if an employee contributes when they should not have?
The tax consequence falls on the employee, which is exactly why the employer explaining it properly at enrollment matters so much.
A Small City Inside a Big Industrial Neighbor
Center Line is a 1.75-square-mile city of 8,552 residents (2020 census) in Macomb County, entirely surrounded by Warren and about 11 miles north of downtown Detroit. Its business base mixes auto dealers such as Ed Rinke Chevrolet Buick GMC and Crest Ford, Binson’s Medical Equipment and Supplies, manufacturers like Whitlam Label and Wico Metal Products, and licensed cannabis operators that helped refill local industrial space. The former Mopar site is slated for a large distribution facility, and the U.S. Army’s Detroit Arsenal sits nearby in Warren. For employers, that means small and midsize groups competing for the same hourly, technical, and retail workers as much larger neighbors, which puts real pressure on benefits design.
Benchmark Against Larger Nearby Employers
Workers here can often choose between a small Center Line business and a large employer a few miles away. We compare your plan’s deductibles, premium share, and dental and vision options against what similar Macomb County employers offer, so you know where your package stands before a candidate or current employee asks.
Networks That Fit a Dense Suburb
Most of your staff likely lives within a short drive, but that drive can cross Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. We check that the carriers you consider include the hospitals and primary care offices your employees actually use across those counties, not just the ones closest to the office.
Steadier Renewals for Small Groups
Many Center Line employers are small groups, and small-group renewals can swing on a handful of large claims. We explain the differences between fully insured, level-funded, and ICHRA options, and we model what each could cost your group across a full renewal cycle before you commit. You see the numbers side by side.
Coverage for Warehouse and Shop Roles
Distribution, dealership service, and light manufacturing jobs are physical. Short-term and long-term disability plus basic life coverage protect income when an off-the-job injury or illness keeps someone home. We compare voluntary and employer-paid designs so you can offer real protection at a cost that fits. We also check how each plan handles pre-existing conditions.
