Stop-loss is coverage an employer buys to limit the risk of paying claims itself. Specific stop-loss reimburses the plan when one person has claims above a set deductible. Aggregate stop-loss reimburses the plan when total claims for the group pass an attachment point, often set as a percentage of expected claims. It is bought by the employer, not by employees, and it does not replace the health plan.
A lower deductible costs more in premium and leaves less risk with the employer. A higher deductible costs less and leaves more. The right level depends on group size, cash reserves and how much risk the employer is willing to carry in a bad year. Comparing the deductible with expected annual claims is a useful first check, and the calculator above does that.
No. Many quotes use a factor above 100 percent of expected claims, and the number varies by carrier and group. Treat the factor here as an assumption until you have a quote.
It is the projected cost of medical and prescription claims paid by the plan. It does not include stop-loss premium or administrative fees.
Specific stop-loss applies per covered person. Some contracts add a higher deductible for certain individuals, which is set in the quote.
