Engineering and Retail in One Small City
A test-lab technician and a big-box retail associate are both Allen Park employees, and their benefits decisions have nothing in common. The first compares network breadth and out-of-pocket maximums against Ford’s own package; the second decides on the payroll deduction alone.
Employers serving both need either benefit classes inside one plan or a genuine dual option. What does not work is a single mid-range plan chosen as a compromise — it is too thin to help recruiting and too expensive for the people who decline it.
Retail Expansion Brings Variable Hours
Fairlane Green is adding several restaurant and service tenants through 2026. New retail and food service means part-time schedules, real turnover and a wage level where affordability testing bites at the bottom of the scale.

Any employer in that category needs a written look-back measurement period, an administrative period and a stability period. Without them the full-time determination is made by instinct every month, and the employer mandate is what eventually tests it.
Plan Structures for Engineers and Hourly Staff
Fully Insured for Smaller Groups
Fixed rate, no claims exposure. Where turnover is high or the claims history thin, this is frequently the right answer and we will say so.
Level Funding When Claims Stay Low
If your employees are healthier than the pool you are priced in, level funding stops that subsidy at a fixed monthly cost and may return a surplus. Underwriting is required.
Dual Option for Two Different Workforces
Run a richer plan alongside one with a small paycheck deduction. With wage-sensitive staff this lifts participation more than raising the employer contribution.
Contributions Set by Employee Class
Fund technical, administrative and hourly staff at different rates inside one plan, documented properly, rather than overfunding everyone.
Compliance for a Growing Retail Footprint
Look-Back Periods for New Retail Staff
Retail and food service staff on variable hours need a written look-back measurement, administrative and stability period.
Affordability at Your Lowest Wage
The test applies to the lowest-paid full-time employee, not the average across a wide range.
The Fifty-Employee Count
Full-time equivalents across commonly owned entities decide the employer mandate. Multiple locations under one owner count together.
A Written Cafeteria Plan
Pre-tax premium deductions depend on a written cafeteria plan document, which a lot of small employers have never put in place.
What Allen Park Employers Ask Us
We are hiring for a new location. What should we set up first?
Written eligibility rules — the hours threshold, the waiting period, the entry date — and a measurement method if hours will vary. Both are cheaper to put in place now than to reconstruct during a dispute.
Which hospital should our network cover?
There is no hospital in the city. Corewell Health Dearborn at 632 beds is the largest nearby, with Henry Ford Wyandotte, Corewell Taylor and Corewell Trenton also close. Two systems in reach usually means breadth is achievable.
Ford Engineering, the Lions and Fairlane Green
Allen Park had 28,638 residents at the 2020 census. Ford operates several facilities inside the city, including the Vehicle Performance and Electrification Center — a 210,000-square-foot building opened in 2020 with a rolling-road wind tunnel, battery test labs and vehicle garages — and the Allen Park Test Laboratories. The Detroit Lions have had their headquarters and practice facility here since 2002, and confirmed in 2025 that they are staying and upgrading. Allen Park Public Schools runs five schools with around 400 full-time-equivalent staff. Fairlane Green, built on a former clay mine and landfill, anchors retail with Target, Meijer, Home Depot and LA Fitness, and is adding five more tenants through 2026. There is no hospital in the city; Corewell Health Dearborn has 632 beds, Henry Ford Wyandotte 322 and Corewell Health Trenton 193.
Engineering, Not Assembly
Ford’s presence here is test labs and electrification research. The workforce is technical and salaried, and it benchmarks against Ford’s own benefits.
No Hospital Inside City Limits
Downriver and Dearborn facilities serve Allen Park. With Corewell and Henry Ford both in reach, network breadth is usually achievable.
Retail Is Expanding
Five new tenants at Fairlane Green through 2026 means more part-time and variable-hour employment in the city.

Allen Park Group Health FAQs
Does CFH work with Allen Park employers?
We do. We advise Allen Park employers on plan design, carrier and funding comparisons, renewal negotiation, compliance and enrollment. We are licensed insurance brokers, and for proper coverage of an account we work in teams of five. Most engagements begin with your current plan and renewal.
Where is the nearest hospital to Allen Park?
There is no hospital inside the city. Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital, with 632 beds, is the largest nearby, and Henry Ford Wyandotte at 322 beds, Corewell Health Trenton at 193 and Corewell Health Taylor are all within a short drive. Corewell Health Dearborn was Oakwood Hospital and then Beaumont Dearborn, so older provider lists may carry those names.
Our broker placed our plan. Can you still look at it?
Yes. The review is free and binds you to nothing. We will show what the increase consists of and whether the market can beat it; if your program is fairly priced, we will say that.
