A locally employed workforce, and what that changes
Taylor had 61,279 residents as of July 1, 2025, Michigan’s seventeenth-largest city. The mean commute is 21.5 minutes — roughly 80% of the national average and well below neighboring Westland’s. Taylor people work Downriver.
The rest of the profile is the part most brokers skip: median household income $61,081, poverty at 18.4%, labor force participation 59.5%, and 16.4% of adults holding a bachelor’s degree — about half the regional rate. By industry of residence, manufacturing leads at roughly 5,000, then retail and health care, with production the second-largest occupation.

That combination has one clear implication. A plan your employees cannot afford to enroll in is not a benefit, it is a line item. Affordability of the employee contribution — especially for family coverage — is where we start in Taylor, not where we end up.
Our Work With Taylor Employers
Contribution and affordability modeling
We model actual enrollment at different contribution splits, including the dependent tier, rather than assuming take-up and being surprised in January.
ACA affordability safe harbors
At these wage levels the rate-of-pay and W-2 safe harbors are not academic. Getting the safe harbor right is often the difference between compliant and penalized.
Hourly and variable-hour tracking
Retail, health support and production schedules swing. Measurement, administrative and stability periods have to be documented and then actually followed.
Worksite access for non-drivers
A meaningful share of the local retail workforce uses transit. Enrollment that assumes everyone has a car and a home computer leaves people uncovered.
Downriver hospitals, under their current names
Corewell Health Taylor Hospital is in the city and is the largest verified employer here. It was Oakwood Heritage, then Beaumont Hospital Taylor. Nearby: Corewell Health Trenton Hospital (formerly Oakwood Southshore, then Beaumont Trenton), Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, and Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital.
The Beaumont names are dead — Beaumont merged with Spectrum Health in February 2022 to form Corewell Health — but they persist in reference sites and some vendor data. Separately, Ascension’s Michigan hospitals became Henry Ford Health when that transaction closed on September 30, 2024. If a directory hands you an Ascension or Beaumont name in 2026, the data is stale, not the network.
One development that bears directly on benefits conversations here: roughly 10,000 Corewell Health East nurses, including at the Taylor campus, organized with the Teamsters and ratified a first contract in August 2026 with 15% pay increases. Affordable health insurance was one of their four named demands. Your employees are having the same conversation, whether or not anyone is bargaining on their behalf.
Taylor’s Biggest Payrolls
Corewell Health Taylor Hospital is the anchor. Taylor School District and the City of Taylor round out the large public employers, and Wayne County Community College District operates its Downriver campus here. Southland Center and the Telegraph Road corridor carry the retail employment base.
Two corrections worth making, because they show up on other pages. Masco Corporation left Taylor in 2015. Its former headquarters at 21001 Van Born Road sat vacant for about six years and, as announced in June 2026, is being redeveloped into a mixed-use facility with offices, an event venue and storage. Anyone still listing Masco — or Ford, which was reported to be leasing the site back in 2017 — as a Taylor employer is working from stale information.
Detroit Metro Airport is in Romulus, not Taylor. Taylor’s western border is Inkster Road and the airport footprint is several miles beyond it. The airport employment cluster is genuinely close and genuinely relevant — and worth noting that Romulus has seen real WARN activity recently, including 192 positions at Yanfeng — but it is a neighboring market, not a local one.
Taylor Employer Questions, Answered
Our employees skip the plan because they cannot afford it. Is there anything to do?
Usually yes, and it rarely requires simply absorbing more cost. The common levers are restructuring contribution tiers so family coverage is not effectively unavailable, adding a second plan option at a different price point, and reviewing whether your funding arrangement is returning unused claims dollars to you rather than to a carrier. We model projected enrollment under each before you commit.
Which ACA affordability safe harbor should we use?
It depends on your pay structure. The rate-of-pay safe harbor is usually simplest for hourly employers with stable rates; the W-2 safe harbor can work better where hours vary a lot; the federal poverty line safe harbor is the most certain but the most expensive. At Taylor wage levels the choice has real dollar consequences, so it is worth running the numbers rather than defaulting.
Is Detroit Metro Airport in Taylor?
No, it is in Romulus, west of Taylor across Inkster Road. It is a major nearby employment cluster and relevant to the local labor market, but it is not in the city.
Our carrier directory lists Beaumont hospitals. Is that current?
No. Beaumont merged with Spectrum Health in February 2022 and the southeast Michigan hospitals are now named Corewell Health, including the one in Taylor. Similarly, Ascension’s Michigan hospitals became Henry Ford Health in September 2024. Old names in a directory usually mean stale data rather than a network change, but it is worth confirming with the carrier and telling employees before open enrollment.
Is there a fee for a Taylor plan review?
No. Send us your current plan and renewal and we will tell you what we see. If your arrangement is already sound, we will say so.
