Standish at a Glance
Standish is the county seat of Arenac County and had 1,458 residents at the 2020 census. These are the facts that shape benefits planning for an employer here.
Location and Access
Standish sits along US-23 at Cedar Street, about five miles from Saginaw Bay, with Pinconning, Sterling and Bay City nearby. Indian Trails runs daily intercity bus service through the area between St. Ignace and Bay City. Staff who live in or near Standish can reasonably commute toward Bay City, so an employer here competes with that wider job market, not only with neighboring businesses.
A Long-Settled Small City
The railroad reached Standish in 1871, it incorporated as a village in 1893 and became a city in 1903. Standish-Sterling Community Schools serves the district, and Citizens Bank, first opened as the State Bank of Standish in 1898, is among the long-running local institutions. Established employers with long-tenured staff tend to value stable renewals and plain communication over constant plan changes.
Government and Institutions
The city runs under a council-manager form of government, and the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility operated from 1990 through 2009. Employers here include schools, banks, government and small businesses, and each carries a different group size and renewal calendar.
Plan Options for a Standish Employer
Small Standish groups usually choose between a traditional fully insured plan and a level-funded plan, which can return unused claims dollars at year end for a group that stays healthy. We compare both against your census, so the choice rests on your own numbers. We also look at contribution strategy, since the split between employer and employee cost often matters more than the carrier name.
Hiring Against Bay City and Saginaw
When a worker can drive to a larger employer in Bay City or Saginaw, a Standish employer needs a benefits package that does not look thin by comparison. Medical, dental and vision coverage, plus a clear way for employees to get help choosing a plan, usually do the most to close that gap. We help you decide where a limited budget does the most good, and we keep the package easy for employees to understand.
Compliance Without a Compliance Department
Compliance changes with group size. An employer reaching 50 full-time-equivalent employees becomes an applicable large employer under the ACA, with offer and reporting duties, and a plan generally needs a Form 5500 filing once it passes 100 participants. We watch your headcount against those lines so nothing arrives as a surprise. Our Michigan benefits compliance guide covers the calendar.
Standish, Michigan: Local Background for Employers
Early Growth
John Standish ran a sawmill that became the town’s first business, and the Standish House hotel opened in 1871 as the railroad arrived. A depot followed in 1888. Towns built around a rail line and a few core employers tend to keep close ties between employers and workers.
Utilities and Charter
Standish received its first commercial electric lighting around 1912 and had 24-hour electricity by 1926. Residents adopted a home-rule charter on September 22, 1970, which still frames how the city is governed.
Roads and Schools
A gravel road linking Pinconning and Standish was built in 1918, and US-23 remains the main route. Standish-Sterling Central High School opened in 2001, with the middle school in the former high school building and the elementary school in Sterling.
What Standish Employers Ask
We are a small Standish employer. Can we still get a competitive plan?
Yes. A group plan can be set up with as few as one W-2 employee and can start in any month, and it does not require an employer contribution. We price your actual census with several carriers, including level-funded designs, and show the tradeoffs before you commit.
Do you have an office in Standish?
No. Our Michigan office is in Bloomfield Hills, and we serve Standish employers by phone, video and on site when needed.
Who will work on our account?
Every account is covered by a team of an account executive, an account manager, a plan analyst, customer service and IT. For proper coverage of an account we work in teams of 5.
