Employee Benefits for Detroit Employers Competing With Big Systems

Detroit, Michigan, the Wayne County seat and the state's largest city
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS CONSULTING · DETROIT, MI

Detroit Group Health Consulting for Employers Hiring Against Giants

Detroit is the state’s largest city and the seat of Wayne County, and its employment base is now three things at once: automotive headquarters, a downtown office core in mortgage, utilities and health insurance, and one of the largest hospital and academic-medical concentrations in the Midwest. An employer here is rarely competing in only one labor market.

An Employee Benefits Broker for Detroit Employers

CFH Insurance Consultants is an independent employee benefits broker for Detroit businesses, from Downtown and Midtown offices to the manufacturers, contractors and nonprofits across the city. We place group health, dental, vision, life and disability coverage, run the renewal and enrollment, and keep the ACA, COBRA and Form 5500 work on schedule. For proper coverage of an account we work in teams of 5: an account executive, an account manager, a plan analyst, customer service and IT.

Small Business Health Insurance in Detroit

A Detroit small business can offer a real group plan sooner than most owners think. One W-2 employee is enough to set one up, it can start in any month, and no employer contribution is required, so an employee-paid plan is a legitimate first step. Small-group premiums come from the carrier’s filed rates, adjusted mainly for each employee’s age and location rather than your group’s claims. For the smallest employers, a QSEHRA is another way to help employees with coverage.

If you already have a plan, send us your renewal and we will tell you whether it looks competitive before you decide anything. Changing brokers takes one broker of record letter; your plan, carrier and ID cards stay the same.

The Benefits Benchmark Is Set by Very Large Employers

Henry Ford Health alone employs more than thirty thousand people. General Motors, DTE Energy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Rocket and Wayne State all run mature benefits programs with dedicated staff behind them. A fifty- or two-hundred-person Detroit employer recruits from that same pool.

Matching those packages on richness is not the play. Matching them on the things a candidate evaluates in ten minutes — the deductible, the out-of-pocket maximum, whether their doctor is in network, whether there is employer money in an account — frequently is, and costs far less.

A Deep Provider Market Is Real Negotiating Room

Henry Ford Hospital has 877 beds, Harper University Hospital 470, Detroit Receiving 248 and Children’s Hospital of Michigan 228. Three systems — Henry Ford, the Detroit Medical Center and the university hospitals nearby — compete for the same patients.

If rising premiums are the concern, our health and cost strategy shows where cost can move between renewals.

Where systems compete, tiered and narrow networks can move real money without cutting anyone off from care. The prerequisite is knowing where your employees actually receive care, which your claims data will tell you before you commit to a design.

Funding Options for a Detroit Group

Fully Insured for Smaller Detroit Offices

The carrier holds the risk and the rate is the rate. For a smaller Detroit employer with a thin or volatile claims history this is often still the right answer, and we will say so.

Level-Funded as a First Step

A fixed monthly cost with claims through a defined account and a possible surplus return. It gives a healthy group its own experience instead of a pooled rate.

Self-Funding Backed by Stop-Loss

Workable from about a hundred enrolled with a steady claims history; our guide to self-funded versus fully insured shows where the arithmetic tips. In Detroit, how the stop-loss treats a known large claimant matters more than the administration fee.

A Tiered Hospital Network

With several competing systems in one city, a tiered design can save meaningfully. Map your claims to facilities first, not after.

ACA and Benefits Compliance for Detroit Employers

PPACA Affordability and Form 1095-C Posting

For plan years beginning in 2026 the affordability ceiling is 9.96% of an employee’s cost for the lowest-priced self-only plan that meets minimum value; for 2027 it is 10.22%. A Detroit employer may post a notice that Forms 1095-C are available on request instead of mailing every copy: it goes up by March 2, stays up through October 15, and a requested form is due within 30 days.

The Fifty-Employee Threshold

The employer mandate counts full-time equivalents across every commonly owned entity, not just the staff at your Detroit address.

Affordability for the Lowest Wage

Affordability is tested against the lowest-paid full-time employee’s pay using the annual IRS percentage; the average wage in the building does not count.

Look-Back Measurement

Variable-hour staff need a written look-back measurement, administrative and stability period to settle who is eligible.

Plan Documents and the Form 5500

Once a plan reaches a hundred participants, a Form 5500 with Schedule A is due, and it needs a wrap document and summary plan description already in place.

What Detroit Employers Ask First

How do we compete with the big systems on benefits?

By spending the same budget where it is visible. An employer contribution to a health savings account and a dental plan that covers major services read better to a candidate than a slightly larger premium subsidy they never see.

Our network changed names. Did coverage change?

Usually not. The Ascension hospitals in this market became Henry Ford facilities when that joint venture closed at the end of September 2024. The buildings and the doctors did not move; the letterhead did.

Who Employs Detroit

Headquarters, Hospitals and a Downtown Office Core

Detroit had 639,111 residents at the 2020 census and is the seat of Wayne County. General Motors keeps its global headquarters in the city and has moved it from the Renaissance Center to Hudson’s Detroit. Henry Ford Health, headquartered here, employs more than thirty thousand people across fourteen hospitals. Rocket Companies, DTE Energy with around ninety-five hundred employees, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan all run headquarters downtown. Wayne State University employs more than twenty-three hundred faculty and over five thousand administrative staff. Stellantis operates the Detroit Assembly Complex at Jefferson North and Mack. On the provider side, Henry Ford Hospital has 877 beds and a Level I trauma center, Harper University Hospital 470, Detroit Receiving 248 and Children’s Hospital of Michigan 228. Henry Ford is building a twenty-storey, $2.2 billion expansion adding 432 private rooms, due to open in 2029.

The Ascension Names Are Gone

Metro Detroit’s former Ascension hospitals carry the Henry Ford name since the joint venture closed on 30 September 2024. Provider directories written earlier are out of date.

Mortgage and Fintech Move in Cycles

Rocket closed two large acquisitions and then offered voluntary buyouts during integration. Employers in that supply chain should expect census movement, and write eligibility rules that survive it.

Construction Is a Decade-Long Story

A $2.2 billion hospital expansion and a headquarters relocation both run for years. That is sustained construction and trades employment, with the benefits questions that come with variable hours.

Common Questions for Detroit Owners

Does CFH work with companies in Detroit?

Yes. Detroit employers use us for plan design, funding and carrier comparisons, renewal negotiation, compliance and enrollment. We are licensed insurance brokers, and for proper coverage of an account we work in teams of five. We generally begin with your existing plan and renewal.

Which Detroit hospitals should our network include?

The city has an unusually deep provider market. Henry Ford Hospital has 877 beds and a Level I trauma center; the Detroit Medical Center operates Harper University Hospital at 470 beds, Detroit Receiving at 248 and Children’s Hospital of Michigan at 228. Several competing systems in one market gives employers genuine network and tiering options.

Another broker has our plan. Will you still review the Detroit renewal?

Yes. The second look is free and does not require any change. We will show what drove the increase and whether a tiered or different network would price better. If the program is already priced right, we will say so.
