Nurse Lines by Carrier

Which health plan carriers describe a 24/7 nurse line, and where to read the details.

Carriers name their nurse lines differently and publish different hours, numbers and eligibility. This page links to our write-up for each carrier, built from that carrier’s own materials. Always confirm the current number and terms for your plan.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network members can call a registered nurse at any hour, day or night, at no cost. The benefit is already part of the plan, so the only job left is making sure employees know the number exists before they need it.

Blue Care Network

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan lists the 24-Hour Nurse Line with a separate number for Blue Care Network HMO members. It is free to the member and answered by registered nurses. The common mistake is calling the PPO number from an HMO card.

What To Check

What we confirm for every carrier.

The Current Number

Numbers and names change, and some carriers use a different line for each plan type. We confirm the number printed on the member ID card. If the printed number does not match what a carrier publishes, we flag it, so employees are not sent to an outdated line when they need advice about care in the middle of the night.

Who Is Eligible

Some lines serve every member, while others apply to certain products or groups. We check whether your plan is covered. Eligibility can depend on the product, the funding arrangement and the group, so we confirm in writing with the carrier before telling employees that a line is available to them.

Whether Employees Know

A line nobody can find does not help. We put the right number in front of employees in enrollment materials. We include the number in the enrollment guide, on the benefits page and in reminders, so employees know it exists before they need it and can find it quickly when they do.

Questions We Get

Common questions about carrier nurse lines.

Does every health plan carrier have a 24/7 nurse line?

Many carriers describe one, but names, hours, numbers and eligibility differ, and some details are not published. Confirm with the carrier for your plan.

Where do employees find the nurse line number?

The member ID card and the carrier’s member site are the usual places. We also confirm the number and add it to open enrollment materials.

Is the nurse line the same as telehealth?

No. A nurse line is a phone conversation with a registered nurse about whether and where to get care. Virtual care is a visit with a provider. Some carriers offer both.

What if our carrier is not on this list?

Ask us. We review the plan materials and tell you what is included.
